    Chapter 31

    “…I went into heat.”

    …Heat?

At that unfamiliar yet strangely recognizable term, Noah’s eyes widened. He knew that word.

Gu Taeheon had never once explained “heat” to Noah. And yet Noah knew of it—purely thanks to one of Gu Taeheon’s lies.

He had tried to hide the pills Noah found in the car, but Noah easily saw through the deception. As a priest of God who had encountered human lies countless times, it had been a simple lie to detect.

And while Gu Taeheon had stepped out for a moment, Noah had borrowed An Jeonghyeok ’s phone through Iron and conducted a search. It hadn’t been difficult; Gu Taeheon had once told Noah about how to easily learn things he didn’t know about this world.

In other words, Gu Taeheon had fallen into his own trap.

    “…A rut… is that correct?”

    “…!”

At Noah’s quiet remark, Gu Taeheon’s shoulders twitched. He slowly lifted his face from where he had buried it in his large hands and looked at Noah. His nape was flushed deep red.

    “H-How… did you—”

Noah smiled faintly. Instead of explaining how he came to know, he focused on what needed to be done. According to his research, an Alpha’s rut—essentially a heat—was akin to a period where they would seduce the opposite dynamic of the same species to conceive life.

That seduction referred to releasing a subtle aura detectable by an Omega. Gu Taeheon was no different. The moment he spoke, the stares of passing people began snapping toward them one by one.

    “Taehun-nim, we should go.”

Noah quickly grabbed his hand. Gu Taeheon, already flushed with rising heat, stared at him with feverish eyes.

    “…Where?”

“Somewhere without people. You’re a public figure. You mustn’t be seen like this.”

With that, Noah strode forward without hesitation. Gu Taeheon followed, not even realizing where he was being led. If he were in his right mind, he would have hidden and sought help or called an ambulance—but his heat-clouded mind could not think properly.

Soon, they arrived in front of an old motel. The moment he realized what kind of place it was, Gu Taeheon stared at Noah in shock.

“How did you even know what this place is?”

Noah silently pointed at a banner. Since Noah did not know what a motel was, the banner had guided him—he had learned the term “lodging,” and remembered this place in case he got lost until nightfall.

*“Za-go-ga Partner Location: Stay 5 nights, get 1 free!”
    *Free voucher usable weekdays only

He had memorized the location while wandering earlier.

But they stood there only briefly. Noah noticed Gu Taeheon’s breathing growing unsteady and hurried inside. Immediately, the owner opened a small window to greet them.

    “Short stay? Overnight?”

    “Ov—… fuu… overnight.”

    “50,000 won.”

Gu Taeheon forced his strained voice to respond, received a worn plastic card, and moved toward the elevator. But after a heavy breath, he suddenly redirected toward the emergency stairs instead. His pace overtook Noah’s, urgency in every step.

He clutched Noah’s hand tightly, as though it were a lifeline, bounding up the stairs two steps at a time. Soon, they reached Room 308.

    Beep. Click.

Only then did Noah realize the card was the room key. Gu Taeheon fumbled with it, even dropping it, but was too delirious to notice. Noah picked it up.

The door opened—and a strange scent drifted out.

Gu Taeheon stepped inside first. Noah moved to follow—

    “Noah.”

    He was blocked.

    “…Your phone. Take it.”

Panting hard, Gu Taeheon shoved his phone into Noah’s hands. When Noah stared in confusion, Gu Taeheon blinked through tremors and forced out words:

“C-Call… call Junghyuk. Follow him… after.”

Only then did Noah understand. Gu Taeheon wanted to trap himself inside alone.

    “That won’t do. Your condition—”

“I told you. It’s heat. Noah, do you not understand what heat means?”

    “….”

A flushed face, ragged breathing, restless trembling hands—everything screamed of an Alpha in rut. There were no heats in Last Chronicle, but beasts had mating seasons.

It was simply the period where they sought to reproduce.

    “I… understand.”

    But Noah’s fist clenched.

“However, an Alpha’s partner is an Omega, and I am not one. I can care for you with a clear mind.”

    “No.”

Gu Taeheon cut him off immediately. His eyes—razor-sharp, barely tethered to sanity.

    “I am not sober.”

Even cornered on a cliff’s edge, he clung to rationality. Remarkable mental strength.

“An apex Alpha in heat devours anything. Omega, Beta—it doesn’t matter.”

    “….”

    “And you’re someone I like.”

He stated it plainly, without weight or hesitation. Gu Taeheon liked Noah—Harudiel Noah Hildegart.

“If you step inside this room, I will consume you whole.”

Noah’s lips parted—yet he could not grab him. Gu Taeheon’s expression was too pained, overtaken by heat, as he shut the door.

    Thud.

Noah stared blankly at the closed door. Was walking away truly the right choice?

He looked down at what he held—Gu Taeheon’s phone, and the room key he had picked up. The phone buzzed.

Logically, it was simple. He should answer, inform him, and wait for the pills or…

…or for someone who could resolve Gu Taeheon’s rut to come.

    That was the correct answer.

    “…O Lord.”

Noah bit his lip. The call cut off unanswered. His fingers trembled as he lifted the card key.

    “Do not forgive me…”

His voice, unlike his trembling hands, was calm and prayerful.

    Beep.

The lock clicked. He grasped the knob.

    “…but deliver me from evil.”

    Creaaak.

Heat poured out the moment the door opened. A faint, intoxicating scent lingered in the warmth.

The room was small; a bed was the only real furniture. Gu Taeheon lay sprawled across it, consumed by fever. The door shut behind Noah as he stepped in.

Once inside, all doubt vanished—his mind cleared. His steps toward the bed were light.

    “Taehun-nim.”

    “Haa…”

Gu Taeheon turned his face toward him, but there was no recognition—only raw desire. His hand reached out, trembling.

Noah did not retreat. Instead, he climbed onto the bed, interlaced their fingers, and moved close.

    “I will… treat you.”

    “Hugh… haa…”

Noah straddled his hips. The posture was indecent, yet Noah’s gaze did not waver. His golden eyes shone even in the dark.

“I came here to protect your life.”
