    Chapter 50

    “Cleric?”

Noah murmured in puzzlement as he checked his class. Beside him, Gu Taeheon, who had also been staring at the screen, asked,

“You already completed your second-class advancement at Jeonghyeok’s place?”

“No, absolutely not. I’m certain I completed the quest and logged out immediately afterward…”

To become a Cleric, one had to reach the required level and personally seek out Hildegart, the Cleric Advancement Priest. Noah, being that very priest himself, knew that rule better than anyone.

Yet Noah had never guided SteelWarrior1234 to meet Hildegart. Deep in thought, he spoke cautiously,

“Could it be that Jeonghyeok-nim secretly advanced the class for me?”

“He wouldn’t do that. Let me ask.”

With a dubious tone, Taeheon tapped his phone to send Jeonghyeok a message. The reply came quickly—he hadn’t touched it, being too swamped just doing dailies on his main.

    “Then it happened automatically.”

    “Is that even possible?”

“Of course not. But… there have been other strange occurrences.”

Noah listed them: how only he could control SteelWarrior1234, how he alone had been able to enter the deep interior of the Tyrel Forest where other players were barred. Noah hesitated, then continued quietly.

“Perhaps the Goddess Eir intends to accomplish something through me.”

“That could be it. But one thing is clear.”

    “Yes? What is it?”

Noah turned abruptly, eyes fixed on Taeheon. Taeheon leaned closer, gaze on the avatar.

“The god—your Eir—her influence only reaches into Last Chronicle.”

    “…”

“So she’s speaking to you through the game. The advancement, the text messages—everything.”

Noah’s eyes widened. He had never once doubted his goddess’s omnipotence. To him, Eir was all-powerful and ever-present.

But as Taeheon said, the goddess only reached him through Last Chronicle, as if bound to it…

    “Cheese tteokbokki delivery!”

Right then, the ordered food arrived. Trays of steaming dishes soon crammed their desks, leaving only narrow space for mouse and keyboard. Noah blinked in alarm.

“Did we truly order this much?”

    “…Seems like it.”

Taeheon scratched his cheek at the sheer amount. He cleared space around Noah so he could play comfortably. Meanwhile, Noah held up the takoyaki he had ordered and stared intensely.

How exactly was one meant to eat this?

Thin fluttering flakes danced atop the round dumplings—some kind of paper? Could one even eat paper? Surely not, even in this peculiar world.

    “Why, Noah? Too hot?”

“No, there is paper on top. How do I remove it before eating?”

A soft laugh escaped Taeheon. Noah watched him, confused, until Taeheon speared a takoyaki with a toothpick and popped it directly into Noah’s mouth.

With the fluttering flakes came soft dough and a sweet-salty sauce that filled Noah’s mouth. His hesitation vanished as he chewed vigorously.

Inside, he encountered a chewy texture.

“There is something unusual inside… chewy, like—hm.”

“That’s octopus. It lives in the sea.”

And Taeheon was right—the more Noah chewed, the more addictive it became. Soon the takoyaki disappeared; Noah swallowed, eyes sparkling.

    “How is it? Good?”

    “Yes. Extremely!”

    “Then try this too.”

Taeheon offered him a corn dog next. The crispy batter and tangy sauce lifted Noah’s cheeks into a round smile.

“To think the world has such delicious things…”

“Glad you like it. Drink some cola too—you’ll choke.”

“You should eat as well, Taeheon-nim, or everything will get cold.”

Only then did Taeheon pick up his chopsticks. In no time, his food disappeared, and Noah eagerly followed suit.

“I understand now how Airon gained weight.”

    “He gained weight?”

“Yes. When I touched him last time, I could tell he was heavier than he was in Last Chronicle.”

“You can tell that just from touching someone?”

Noah nodded. Healing normally worked without contact, but physical touch allowed him to fully sense one’s condition.

    “So what about me?”

    “Pardon?”

    “Can you tell, for me?”

    “….”

Noah peeked around—luckily, the PC café was sparsely populated, and no one was nearby. He gently placed his hand over Taeheon’s forearm.

His fingertips met firm, dense muscle.

    “You have… gained muscle.”

    “Compared to before we met?”

“Yes. No—compared to yesterday. You have been running every dawn, haven’t you?”

Taeheon nodded. He’d recently resumed his athletic regimen.

“I really might need to scout you.”

    “…Scout me?”

“I’ll need to recruit athletes soon. Want a job? You’ll earn a lot.”

    Money?

Noah blinked. He had never cared for money—in his world, he could have amassed wealth with divine power if he wished.

But then he glanced at their food. Over fifty thousand won, wasn’t it? He didn’t fully grasp currency, but he knew Taeheon spent freely for his sake.

Noah suddenly wanted to repay him. A strange feeling—wanting money.

“I would like to earn money, if I can work legally…”

    Ding—

A notification chimed on Taeheon’s phone. They checked it together.

Noah slowly lifted his head. SteelWarrior1234 still stood at the Tyrel Forest entrance on-screen. Noah moved his mouse with trembling fingers and opened his inventory.

    Click.

    The inventory window expanded.

    Funds: 999,999,999,999,999 gold

    “…ha.”

Previously unable to afford even a loaf of bread, SteelWarrior1234’s bags overflowed with the maximum amount of currency possible. Noah laughed hollowly, then fell silent.

    “Taeheon-nim.”

    “Mm?”

“I prayed this was simply my imagination—but it seems not.”

Golden eyes flickered under monitor light.

“It appears the goddess truly wants me to return to Last Chronicle.”

Perhaps the goddess wasn’t guiding him…

Perhaps she had lost him—and was calling him back.
